Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday he will sign into law a bill that bans the adoption of the country's children by US citizens.
He would also change procedures for the support of orphans, the Interfax news agency reported.
The bill was unanimously passed by the upper house of parliament on Wednesday, and earlier by the lower house, the Duma, amid heightened tensions between the two countries.
It was introduced in reaction to a US law called the Magnitsky Act that seeks to sanction Russian officials suspected of involvement in human rights violations.
Russia has protested against the US act, which is named after Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer who died in a Moscow jail in 2009 after investigating corruption in the Interior Ministry.
Putin last week called the US law "an unfriendly act towards the Russian Federation" that "poisons our relations."
Russian rights activists have condemned the anti-US bill and protested outside the Duma. The Orthodox Church has supported the bill.
