The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has hailed the nomination of Mr. Martin Alamisi Burns Kaiser Amidu, as the Special Prosecutor (SP). Togbe Afede XVI, its President, said naming the well-known anti-corruption crusader to the position, was a clear demonstration by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that he was eager to ensure accountability in political and socio-economic governance of the nation.
Speaking at a meeting of the House in Kumasi, he indicated that greater transparency and accountability in governance were critical to development.He added that corruption and wanton dissipation of the nation’s resources by greedy - selfish individuals and groups, had been responsible for the slow progress and high level of poverty among the people.
It was therefore imperative that the government took bold steps to prevent people from stealing and impoverishing everybody. He said Mr. Amidu had left nobody in doubt about his love for his nation and rallied all to give strong backing to him in the corruption fight.
Togbe Afede spoke of the need for change in attitude – to eschew selfishness and rejection of corruption by public officials. He also called for increased investment in education, infrastructure development and building of strong institutions to promote the welfare of all. He reminded his colleague chiefs to do more to bring progress and make things better for the people they were leading.
They should additionally forge a united front and support the government to implement its development vision. Togbe Afede announced the re-start of construction works on the NHC’s Office Complex and hinted of plans to establish a website and radio station.
