A Catholic bishop in southern Nigeria has resigned after bishops in the Ahiara diocese rejected him, reports the AFP news agency. The protests were motivated by the fact that Peter Okpaleke was not from the area, the Catholic Herald newspaper said at the time.
Bishop Okpaleke comes from the neighbouring Anambra state.
He was appointed in 2012 but was never able to take up his post.
In June Pope Francis met a group from the Ahiara diocese where priests had been refusing to accept Bishop Okpaleke. He gave the priests 30 days to accept Bishop Okpaleke or risk being suspended.
But the row was not resolved.
The Catholic Herald reports that the case was a test of the pope's authority.
