A National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential hopeful, Goosie Tanoh on Wednesday called on the founder of the NDC former President Jerry John Rawlings at his Ridge office in Accra.
His visit is to ask for the former President’s blessings to contest the presidential primary to win and reorganise the party to restore voluntarism, participatory decision-making, integrity, transparency, regain public trust and reposition it in national life and recapture power to resume the national democratic transformation of the country.
Mr Tanoh noted that the ethical collapse of state institutions, grinding poverty and insecurity of Ghanaians had dangerous similarities to the situation that confronted Ghanaians in the late 70s and early 80s.
“An urgent course-correction is required if our nation is to avoid the kind of social collapse it faced in 1981 which requires massive and sacrificial national mobilisation not only solves material problems but challenges selfish, elitist values and leadership practices that underpin them.
“Political parties, central political institutions the 31st December Revolution bequeathed to the Fourth Republic, are simply not delivering value for society and the establishment must be overhauled to bring the masses back to the forefront of national development struggles.
“Today the NDC needs leadership that understands mass mobilisation and participatory democracy, my greatest pride remains my mass organisations in achieving this mobilisation and if I have any claim to leadership now it is based on this experience.
“It will be a mistake to assume that dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs will translate automatically into a rejection of the NPP administration.
“We need to think deeply about the challenges ahead, make right choices and commitments not only to achieve victory but be able to deliver the kind of leadership that the country needs,” Mr Tanoh stressed.
For his part, former President Rawlings reiterated the need for a free and fair party electoral process at regional, national and flagbearer level, it will be important the campaign is devoid of the indecent money politics that had plagued it in recent years.
“I will leave the decision as to who leads the NDC into the 2020 elections to the collective judgment of the delegates and not be an obstacle to all those seeking leadership positions in the party.”
