The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) says its planned nationwide strike will proceed on September 30, 2025, despite assurances from the Ministry of Transport to resolve outstanding salary arrears.
The Union has threatened to ground operations and stage a mass protest if the government fails to clear over a year’s wage arrears owed to its members.
In a letter to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the union said the prolonged neglect of workers’ welfare has plunged families into severe social and economic hardship.
The workers accuse the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) of ignoring repeated appeals for dialogue, despite interventions sought from the National Labour Commission, Parliament’s Transport Committee, and the Ministry of Labour.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe assured that measures were being put in place to address the issue.
However, the Secretary of the Railway Workers Union, Benjamin Essuman, dismissed the Minister’s assurances in an interview on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, on Thursday, September 17, insisting the strike would go ahead.
“No, it hasn’t become [moot], this is just a normal talk we have been getting. So, it’s not something that can make us stop the strike action. We don’t believe the political talks again,” he said.
