Member of Parliament for Gushegu and senior member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Hassan Tampuli, has described the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries as a victory for the entire party, praising the conduct of both the winner and losers.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday February 2, Mr. Tampuli said the internal party elections were highly competitive and more challenging than the 2024 general elections.
“All in all, I think that the party is the victor. The losers took it with equanimity. The winner took it with a deep sense of humility and I think that the party should stand in readiness to unite and then tackle the opponent ahead of us – that is the NDC,” he told host Bernard Avle.
He added that the dynamics of the primaries required constant attention and flexibility from campaign teams.
“I was telling some of our team members that I found this election even more challenging and tougher than the 2024 elections. The dynamics were so fluid. One day something happens, another day another thing happens, and you have to be reacting. It is so difficult for you to take your leg off the pedal.
“As soon as you leave a place, somebody goes there…You could find out some places you’ve been already, somebody has gone to roughen up the place, so you have to leave your constituency and go to some other constituencies,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia secured a decisive victory in the NPP primaries with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent of the total valid votes cast, positioning him to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Kennedy Agyapong came second with 46,554 votes, translating into 23.76 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes(18.53 percent). Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong followed with 1,999 votes (1.02 percent) and 402 votes (0.21 percent) respectively.
