The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, and the party’s Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, have been granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service following their arrest over separate allegations.

The two party officials were released in Accra on Monday after hours of interrogation, with senior figures of the party stepping in to secure their bail.

Abronye DC was reportedly picked up by police over alleged threats directed at a judge presiding over a case at the Adenta Circuit Court, while Baba Amando is being investigated in connection with claims of false publication.

Speaking to journalists after their release, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed that he stood surety for both men and facilitated their release after agreeing to meet the conditions set by investigators.

He used the opportunity to call for restraint on the part of the police, urging law enforcement agencies to exercise tolerance and professionalism in handling politically sensitive matters.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the CID for what he described as their responsiveness in addressing the situation.

However, the development has sparked sharp political reactions, with the NPP accusing the government of using state institutions to target opposition figures.

The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, alleged that the arrests were part of a broader strategy to deflect public attention from governance challenges.

According to him, the government is facing increasing criticism over unmet commitments, including key legislative and economic issues, and is resorting to actions that create political distractions.

He further claimed that members of the opposition were being subjected to undue pressure, insisting that such developments could deepen political tensions if not handled with care.

The police have yet to provide further details on the investigations.
