The Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Atta Issah, has appealed for calm following a violent clash between residents of Damankuniyili and Nyeshee communities that reportedly left one person dead and several others injured.
In a statement issued after the incident, Mr Issah said he received news of the clash with “deep shock and profound sadness,” describing it as a tragic development involving two communities with shared history and cultural ties.
He said the incident had created fear and anxiety among residents, stressing that no disagreement should lead to the loss of human lives.
“Damankuniyili and Nyeshee are sister communities that share a common history, culture, and destiny. It is therefore heartbreaking to witness such an unfortunate development between people who have lived together as one,” he stated.
The MP urged residents, especially the youth, to end all hostilities and embrace dialogue, peace and mutual understanding.
He also called on chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, religious leaders and other stakeholders to support efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote reconciliation while allowing state institutions to investigate the incident.
Mr Issah expressed confidence in the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those found responsible for the violence are brought to justice.
“Justice must prevail, but it must be pursued through lawful means and not through acts of retaliation,” he said.
The MP commended the Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Imoro Gong, and the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) for their swift response in restoring calm to the affected communities.
He urged residents to cooperate with security measures introduced by the authorities, noting that the measures are aimed at protecting lives and property and preventing further escalation.
Mr Issah extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery, while calling on both communities to work together to restore peace and promote development.
