Clashes between police and protesters in Guinea's capital Conakry on Wednesday injured more than 20 people. The government said in a statement that 18 policemen were injured in Conakry as the demonstrators threw stones at them, one was said to be in critical condition.
Reports said police fired tear gas and live ammunition at protesters, injuring at least two. The opposition organized a march in the capital of the mineral-rich West African country, demanding that an election scheduled for May be free and fair.
President Alpha Conde was elected in 2010, but the legislative polls have been delayed four times. Last week the opposition announced it would boycott the election, saying the preparations for the poll were flawed.
