U.S. republicans Tuesday called on House Democrats to shun Representative Anthony Weiner, one day after the Democratic congressman admitted he had lewd online relationships with at least six women.
Weiner, 46, seen as a leading candidate for New York City mayor in 2013, said on Monday he was "deeply ashamed" for his behaviour including sending a picture of an aroused man in underpants to a woman in Seattle via his Twitter account.
Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was quoted during a visit to Louisa as saying, "I don't condone his (Weiner's) activity. And I think he should resign."
Reince Priebus, head of the Republican Party, said in a statement, "Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign."
"We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately. We need a resignation,” Priebus added.
Some Democrats also voiced their concern and regret over Weiner's scandal.
House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that Weiner "disclosed conduct which he described as inappropriate," and "an investigation by the Ethics Committee... is warranted."
In the Senate, Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters, "I know Congressman Weiner. I wish there was some way I can defend him, but I can't."
However, in Monday's press conference Weiner indicated he does not intend to quit his House of Representatives seat.
