Ghana’s Black Starlets began their quest for laurels at the Africa Under-17 championship in a whirlwind fashion, beating Cameroun 4-0 in their opening game as the 2017 edition of the championship kicked off in Gabon yesterday.
Returning to the competition after missing out in two editions, the 1991 and 1995 African and World Champions, ensured they started on a very good note with goals from captain Eric Ayiah and Ibrahim Sulley, both of whom scored a brace.
Ayiah played his captain’s role well, starting off the winning tone for the Starlets with his first goal on the 32nd minute. A minute later, Ibrahim made it two for Ghana and before the Camerounians could recover from that shocking quick goals, Ibrahim had tripled the lead, making a hope of a possible comeback a big task for the Camerounians.
Ghana’s captain put the icing on the cake with his second on the day and the fourth goal for the team when he got on the scoresheet again on the 66th minute.
The Starlets are joint leaders in the Group A standings with Guinea who beat hosts, Gabon, 5-1 in the game also played yesterday after the opening ceremony.
With only eight teams competing in this competition, the Starlets could pick an eary semi-final ticket and realise their dream of qualifying for the World Championship in India if they win against Gabon in their second game on Wednesday.
Ghana: Danladi Ibrahim, Osman Faisal Abdul Razak Yusif, Najeeb Yakubu , Edmund Arko-Mensah, Rashid, Mohammed Iddris, Emmanuel Toku, Gabriel Leveh, Ibrahim Sulley and Eric Ayiah.
