Aryee was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle being driven by one Officer Aikins of the Mamprobi Police post earlier this month while riding a motorbike and broke his neck in the process.

However, he was only able to undergo the surgery after the Ministry pledged to pay the GHC14,000 cost involved.

The deputy Minister of MOYS, Pius Enam Hadzide, redeemed the pledge last Wednesday when he paid for Aryee's entire surgery bills at the Korle-Bu Department of Surgery in Accra.

"On behalf of the Minister, Isaac Asiamah, we wish to express our appreciation to the hospital staff and management for taking care of our boxer," Mr Hadzide said after paying Aryee's bills.

"You recall that a few days ago we were here to pay him a visit and assured the hospital administration that the Ministry had decided to pay the hospital bills,"

"So today we are here to visit him, find out how he is faring after the surgery and settle his bills. We are always there and if there is anything to do don't hesitate to call us because he is a national asset," he added.

Mr Hadzide also urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Appeatu, to investigate Aryee's accident and, if it is found to be true, institute the necessary sanctions.

Aryee last defended his national welterweight title against Charles Tetteh on March 11 at the Bukom Boxing Arena and now faces an uncertain future in boxing after the surgery.

Doctors estimate that he will spend the next three months wearing a rigid neck cast which will be removed later to enable him to begin rehabilitation.
