Jose Mourinho picked Romelu Lukaku to fill Zlatan Ibrahimovic's boots at Manchester United after snubbing the chance to sign Arsenal new boy Alexandre Lacazette, sources have told ESPN FC.
United are close to wrapping up a £75 million deal for Lukaku and the striker could make his debut against the LA Galaxy on Saturday.
Lukaku and Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata were Mourinho's top two targets as he searched for a replacement for Ibrahimovic, who has been released while he recovers from a knee ligament injury.
Negotiations with Real Madrid over Morata were ended immediately last week after United reached an agreement with Everton for Lukaku.
However, Lacazette was also briefly considered before the Frenchman sealed a £52.7m move from Lyon to Arsenal.
He scored 129 goals in 275 games during eight seasons at Lyon and has won 13 caps for France, but sources said United quickly decided the 26-year-old would not be the ideal fit at Old Trafford because of doubts about his suitability to the Premier League, his physical impact and his record in big games. It led United to push ahead with negotiations for Lukaku and Morata before opting to sign the Belgium international.
Lukaku is set to be announced as a United player this week ahead of a training camp at UCLA in California. On Saturday, he had his medical in Los Angeles, where he has been holidaying with new teammate Paul Pogba.
Mourinho and the rest of the squad arrived in L.A. on Sunday ahead of games against the LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Real Madrid are also set to train at UCLA this week, raising the prospect of Morata coming face-to-face with Lukaku, the man who ended the Spaniard's hopes of moving to Old Trafford.
