Former Bayern Munich sport director Matthias Sammer has defended attacker Thomas Mueller in the ongoing battle for starting positions at the Bundesliga champions. "You have to look at the career performance with Thomas," Sammer told Eurosport on Monday.
"He is a world champion, Champions League winner, German champion and German Cup winner." The top scorer at the 2010 World Cup, Mueller spent most of Satuday's 2-0 win for Bayern Munich at Werder Bremen on the bench.
"I don't know exactly what qualities the coach wants to see," Mueller said. "But mine are seemingly not 100 per cent requested." Rather than starting with Mueller, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti used Franck Ribery, Thiago and Arjen Robben behind main striker Robert Lewandowski in Bremen.
Sammer said that vice-captain Mueller was one of the "very important stable factors" in the Bayern side. Ancelotti said the decision to bench Mueller was "purely tactical" and praised his performance as "really good" when brought off the bench.
