Tarkwa based golfer Kojo Barnni has won the 4th edition of the just ended Gold Fields Professional Golfers Association (PGA) championship held at the Damang golf course. Barnni beat 2017 West African champion Vincent Torgah to a sudden death from hole 18, after the two had tied off at a total play of 282 of intense four days of play.
The championship, which attracted international golfers from other African countries, also saw Samba Niang of Senegal placing third with a total play of 286 as against 287 and 294 from Emos korblah of Achimota golf club and Nigerian golfer Olapade Sunday respectively. In an interview with the GNA sports after his impressive showing, Barnni congratulated his competitors for a good game and noted of his intentions to carry the flag of Ghana high in golf.
“The competition wasn’t an easy one at all because, they are all international players and they really gave me a tough run of games, especially in controlling pressure and my swing was tough.
“I have played against Olapade and Vincent in Nigeria, so I had to play the game with much experience since Olapade was leading after the first day of play. Sharing his experience on the final day, Barnni said “I was leading by a stroke and Vincent played five under and Samba had played three under for us to tie, but it never dawned on me that all was lost.
“I knew I had a lot of strategies to help me reach my goal” he said. According to the GH?25,000.00 winner, Caddies should never be taken for granted in golf games saying “I always had to consult my Cadi for assistance. He calms me down when I look nervous and it really helps”. The special guest for the day and also titled sponsor for the championship Mr. Nick Holland, CEO for Gold Fields congratulated the PGA and all the golfers for putting up a great show to help Golf Fields achieve one of its sustainability projects, which is looking at employees and the communities in which they operate. “The key part of our sustainability project is sports development and it help us to create discipline and character, which also provides enjoyment outside working hours. “We want to promote the people who are active in golf, so we are really keen in developing young golfers in Ghana. “And it is our hope that one day, we would see them compete on the world stage and we must start from Ghana and Damang has a lovely golf course built over the years to help us achieve that,” he concluded. The competition, which saw almost all golf clubs from the country taking part, had the top three winners taking home GH?25,000.00, GH?15,000.00 and GH?12,500.00 respectively, with sponsorship from Gold Fields, Total Ghana, Zen Petroleum, ATS, Engineers and Planners, Stellar Logistics and other corporate sponsors. Meanwhile Barnni and Torgah noted of their preparedness for the next tournaments, which is the Accra open and the “Road to Mongomo” in Equatorial Guinea, and looking ahead for other European championships.
