Plant-based diets have gained in popularity in recent years - and this includes athletes looking for a competitive edge to recover faster and perform better. Footballers, NBA players and F1 drivers are among those who have spoken out about the benefits they’ve noticed since turning vegan.
Even some teams have established themselves as vegan, cutting out any meat, dairy or eggs from menus, and serving players and supporters plant-based foods instead. Forest Green Rovers was officially recognised as the first vegan football club in 2017 in a bid to improve player performances and give fans a healthier experience on match days.
Millionaire owner and eco-activist Dale Vince said, “We didn’t focus on what was not in the food but the food itself and how good it tastes." Rovers sealed promotion to the English Football League for the first time last year.
Around 15 players from the NFL’s Tennessee Titans also adopted a vegan-diet ahead of the 2018 season, with some players having previously claimed that it helped improve their energy levels.
Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan said, "Overcoming the preconceived notions is the biggest part. I was a part of it. I used to believe athletes had to eat meat to maintain play, then I educated myself."
But while critics might see it as limiting athletes' intakes, many sports stars have gone vegan without it affecting their ability to perform at the top level, year after year.
So do you think you could spot the plant-powered athletes from the bunch below?
