The Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG) will for the first time in its history introduce the National Badminton League in February 2019.
The league, would be a two season league that would be played in 13 cities across the country including Akatsi, Akim Oda,Swedru, Tarkwa, Sunyani, Wa, Bolga, Tamale, Koforidua, Tarkoradi, Kumasi, Accra and Cape Coast.
According to Mr. Yeboah Evans, the President of BAG, the league would be used as a benchmark to rank the players on the national ranking to aid in the selection of players for international tournaments.
"Players would build up points in each game they play and that’s how we would rank them, so we would l be far ready in time before the All African games in Morocco 2019," Mr. Evans said.
"We didn’t have a ranking system before but we currently rank them per the last three years we have held the national championship so we use that to rank them for the national ranking. For the world ranking our world body ranks them."
He added that, this was part of BAG's efforts to develop the sport across the country and use it as a platform to get badminton more closer to the local people.
He said the national league was expected to increase the number of badminton clubs in the country an as well keep the players in active and competitive mood at all times.
The Association would host a National Schools Championship from December 7- December 9 at the Tema International School, which would help in nurturing young talents.
