A splendid performance from Accra Giants in the finals of the MTN Skate Soccer league saw the homers lift the trophy with a convincing 5-1 scoreline over Ashanti Warriors.
The finals played at the Accra Sports Stadium over the weekend sent spectators into wild jubilation over the Giants win.
The homers announced their intention and presence by pilling pressure on their opponent which resulted in a penalty.
The skipper of Accra Giants, Gariba Saani expertly converted from the spot to put his side ahead.
Gariba again added three goals to his name before going for recess to end the first half 4-0.
From the break, Accra Giants dominated play and kept pushing until they had the 5th goal which put the seal on the triumph before Ashanti Warriors grabbing a consolation goal.
At the end of the game, Gariba Saani was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and also the higher goalscorer after netting nine goals.
Rafiu Amidu of Ashanti Warriors went home with the best goalkeeper award.
The president of the International Federation of Skate Soccer (IFSS), Mr. Albert K. Frimpong congratulated the winners for the solid display and expressed gratitude to the sponsors, MTN and Binatone.
“We wanted to see improvements in our previous events and I’m very elated that our efforts have caught the attention of corporate bodies like MTN and Binatone coming onboard to sponsor.
“It hasn’t been easy all this while but we will do more to ensure we get to a level where we wanted that is, getting these athletes off the streets”.
The Ag. Marketing Officer of telecommunications giants, MTN said “We believe in touching the lives of people and the communities in which we operate and coming to sponsor these athletes who are under privileged and their sport forms part the less financed sport touching the lives”.
Under the auspices of the International Federation of Skate Soccer, the 2019 MTN Skate Soccer league is aimed at taking away physically challenged from the streets and to offer them the platform to exhibit their talents through the game of soccer.
The IFSS President, hinted that, Ghana will host the Skate Soccer cup of nations next year and the technical handlers are expected to select players from the just ended champions to form a team to represent the nation.
