Jurgen Klopp and Ilkay Gundogan helped Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final in 2013, when they lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich at Wembley, and the German midfielder is keen to go all the way with Manchester City this term.
"It was probably the biggest defeat I have had my career and a reason I want to go back to the final and win the trophy, but it was also a great experience," he said. "The way to the final was incredible and still brings me goosebumps. We played incredible football that season. Defeats are part of football, even though it was a bad, sad, frustrating day.
"I am not sure if there is anyone in the [Manchester City] squad who has won the Champions League before, I doubt it," Gundogan added. "It is a great competition to be a part of.
"I remember the times when I was growing up watching the Champions League at home with the family - the midweek games, it was like a festival. We celebrated watching Champions League games so, for me, that is the highest level you can play football on."
