Coach Maxwell Konadu’s charges took advantage of two miscalculated offside traps set by WAFA to score two early goals in the first half, before WAFA got a consolation seven minutes before regulation time.

It was Hans Kwofie who started the party for the home side in the 23rd minute after he was released 50 yards into the WAFA half. The forward controlled the ball on his right foot before unleashing a powerful volley into the back of the net for the opening goal.

Ten minutes later, Legon Cities increased the tally when attacker Hamzah Abdul Nasiru beat the offside trap to tap in the second goal from close range to spell misery for WAFA who are battling relegation despite finishing third in the Premier League last season.

Due to the bad nature of the pitch, both teams struggled to control the ball effectively as it often bounced on the turf and sometimes changed direction to elude the players.

That hard nature of the pitch notwithstanding, the hosts were determined to make the most out of the situation and attacked at the early stages of the game, with Jonah Attuquaye and Kwofie posing the biggest threat.

WAFA looked more composed after recess as they laid siege at the hosts’ area but resolute defending by the Royals often thwarted the WAFA onslaught.

The Sogakope-based side kept the onslaught and were nearly rewarded in the 75th when Awudu Mohammed and Moses Ayidem paired effectively in the penalty box of Legon Cities whose goalkeeper, Eric Ofori Antwi, blocked Ayidem’s shot.

Ayidem was second time lucky when he got a consolation for his side after he picked a pass from the right and surged into the box to unleash a low drive but was blocked by the Legon Cities defence before volleying the rebound with his left into the back of the net.
