Asante Kotoko kept their Ghana Premier League title ambitions firmly alive yesterday with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The result has cut the gap at the top of the table to just two points with one round of matches remaining.
In the absence of star striker Kwame Opoku, who is currently with the Black Stars for the Unity Cup in London, young forward Albert Amoah rose to the occasion with a sensational hat-trick, delighting the home fans and reigniting the Porcupine Warriors' title chase.
Medeama stunned the Kumasi faithful with an early opener, as Kingsley Braye found the net in the 5th minute to give the visitors a dream start. But Kotoko quickly regrouped, and Amoah drew the sides level from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute.
He then added a second just before the break, tapping in from close range in the 41st to hand Kotoko a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The second half saw more drama as Manuel Mantey equalised for Medeama in the 67th minute, seemingly dashing Kotoko's momentum.
However, Amoah had other ideas, capping off a remarkable individual performance with his third goal in the 78th minute — a composed finish that ultimately proved decisive.
The win moves Kotoko within two points of league leaders Nations FC, who abandoned their penultimate match in controversial circumstances. The title race is now set for a dramatic conclusion, with Kotoko facing Vision FC — who are already safe from relegation — in their final match.
Medeama, on the other hand, have slipped out of the top four and will aim to end their campaign on a high when they host Berekum Chelsea in Tarkwa on the final day.
