A 41st-minute header by Mawuli Wayo handed Accra Hearts of Oak an important 1-0 win over Vision FC in their Ghana Premier League (GPL) Match Day 12 game played at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon on Saturday.
The win was Hearts’ second home win of the season.
The Phobians went into the game as the second-worst team at home this season, having won just a single game, drawn three, and lost one.
Until Saturday’s win, Hearts went three games without a win, drawing twice and lost once.
That run created some tension and anxiety among the playing, increasing pressure on the team to win Saturday’s fixture.
And after moving their games to the University of Ghana Stadium, they needed to kick start their campaign there on a positive note.
All of these and many factors conspired to increase the desire of the team to halt the poor home run, and that desire and hunger was evident in their game from the blast of the referee’s whistle.
Against a side they were yet to lose to in the league, the Phobians came into the match with many predicting a win.
Indeed, they lived up to that billing as they controlled the tempo of the game but failed to add to the score line due to their profligacy in front of goal.
Hearts started the game as the stronger of the two, knocking on the door for the opener, and nearly had it through skipper Kelvin Osei Asibey, who saw his bicycle kick cleared off the line by defender Frank Dongballe in the 17th minute.
Raphael Amponsah had an opportunity from a rebound which flew over the goal post before Asibey and George Paaku had their header and a strike missed the post midway through the half.
Four minutes before the break, Wayo reacted quickest to head home the opener after a corner kick from Paaku was headed toward goal by Ali Mohammed.
After the break, Vision FC’s goalkeeper, Godwin Ametefe, denied George Paaku an excellent goal from outside the box, stretching to his elastic limit to push the ball away.
Against the run of play, Bernard Kwarteng nearly drew level for the visitors, but after ‘stealing’ the ball from Osei Asibey outside the box, his right-footed strike hit the post.
In the 73rd minute, goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi made the save of the game when he opened up his body to block a header from Sherif Mohammed Iddrisu in the six-yard box to keep his side in the lead.
