Emmanuel Amos Abanyie emerged champion of the 12th edition of the Gold Fields Tarkwa Internal Tennis Tournament after staging a spirited comeback to defeat his club rival, Jude Buabeng Asiedu, in a thrilling men’s singles final.
Abanyie recovered from losing the first set to clinch a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 victory in a contest that lasted two hours, sealing his place as the standout performer of the tournament and underlining his growing reputation within the club.
This year’s competition recorded a significant increase in participation, rising from 95 players last year to 120 entries, a development organisers attributed to strong leadership and the active involvement of the club’s executives and life patrons.
In the ladies singles final, sisters Tracy Ampah and Lisel Ampah treated spectators to an engaging encounter, with the elder sibling, Tracy, prevailing 6-3, 6-2 to claim the title. The two later teamed up in the ladies doubles to defeat Eunice Minta and Della Addae 9-5, completing a successful outing for the Ampah sisters.
The men’s doubles final was equally competitive, as William Ampah and Johnson Adingelah produced a dominant display to overcome Nicholas Amoah and Osman Karim 9-3. William Ampah went on to add another title in the mixed doubles, partnering his daughter, Tracy Ampah, to beat Emmanuel Amos Abanyie and Roseline Minta Afari 9-3.
In other senior categories, Michael Bonsu captured the men’s 45-plus title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Collins Okyere, while Anthony Mann dug deep to defeat Oscar Kudordzi 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 to secure the men’s consolation title. Josephine Kamara also showed resilience in the women’s singles beginners final, coming from a set down to beat Belinda Sam 3-6, 6-2, 10-4.
The junior events highlighted emerging talent, with Jayden M. Bonsu topping the boys under-eight category with 54 points ahead of Elliot Twum on 49 points. Jeffery M. K. Sarkpoh won the boys under-ten title after beating Jason Aikins 7-3, while Roland Ogoe claimed the boys 12-and-under crown with an 8-3 victory over Adusei Opoku Yeboah. In the under-14 category, Kimarty Yirenkyi maintained his dominance, winning the title for the second consecutive year after edging Caleb Tetteh 8-7 (8-6).
