It was a glorious weekend for Ghanaian volleyball as home teams Ghana Army and Kalibi Volleyball Club delivered a historic double triumph at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship.
The tournament concluded in spectacular fashion last Sunday at the Borteyman Sports Complex, with the local champions sweeping aside their Nigerian opponents in both the men’s and women’s finals.
In the highly anticipated men's final, Ghana Army Volleyball Club lived up to their billing as tournament favorites, defeating a resilient Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club in straight sets.
Playing before a fervent home crowd, the soldiers displayed a masterclass in defensive resilience and tactical attacking to secure a 3–0 (25–21, 25–21, 25–23) victory.
The match was not without its tense moments, particularly in the third set where the Nigerian side fought back from a deficit to level the scores. However, the Ghanaian team held their nerve in the dying moments to close out the set and seal the championship.
The women’s final was even more commanding, as Kalibi Volleyball Club asserted their dominance over Nigeria’s Vipers Volleyball Club. Kalibi’s superior coordination and sharp attacking play proved too much for their opponents, resulting in a comprehensive 3–0 (25–15, 25–16, 25–13) victory.
Individual accolades reflected the local dominance as well. Kalibi’s dynamic playmaker, Benedicta Akorli, was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the women’s category for her influential performances.
For the men, the MVP award went to Ghana Army's standout player, Imoro Alhassan, whose consistency and brilliance were instrumental in his team's title-winning campaign.
The championship saw participation from 32 top volleyball clubs representing seven West African nations, underscoring the region's growing passion and competitive spirit in the sport.
Speaking after the finals, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Austin Luguterah, lauded the successful execution of the tournament. He highlighted the significance of Ghana hosting such a large-scale event for the first time.
“This is a remarkable achievement for Ghana volleyball,” Dr. Luguterah stated. “Hosting this event for the first time and recording historic club participation in the history of African volleyball, yet still delivering a successful tournament, is truly commendable. We cannot wait to host the entire continent of Africa in the coming years.”
The victories by Ghana Army and Kalibi represent a watershed moment for the sport in the country. The "historic double" not only highlights the depth of talent in Ghana but also signals the nation's rising dominance in the West African sub-region.
Furthermore, the seamless hosting of the championship at the world-class Borteyman Sports Complex serves as a powerful testament to Ghana’s growing sports infrastructure and its readiness to position itself as a prime destination for major international sporting events.
