Canada Liberal Party Leader Stephane Dion on Thursday offered support for the Conservative Government's throne speech, giving assurance that the newly-elected government would stay.
The Harper Government revealed its major policy in a throne speech on Wednesday, pledging spending cut and expanded investment and trade as well as other measures to shun Canada from the global economic downturn.
The speech is expected to go to a confidence vote in the House of Commons later this month and the Conservatives needs at least one opposition party's support to survive.
Dion said in Parliament on Thursday he and other party members would make sure the government acted decisively to deal with the current economic crisis. But his party would not vote against the throne speech as it would be irresponsible to take down the government so soon after last month's election.
But he went on to criticize the Conservative Government and its economic track record, accusing it of squandering Canada's multi-billion dollar surpluses, which began under the former Liberal government after decades of surplus spending.
The other two opposition parties, the separatist Bloc Quebecois and the leftist New Democratic Party, have indicated they would vote against the throne speech.
