French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived here Monday morning for his first state visit to Spain.
Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni touched down at Madrid's Barajas airport at 11:30 a.m. local time, where they were met by the Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.
The French president will meet King Juan Carlos in the afternoon and will spend the rest of his time meeting the leader of the opposition Popular Party, Mariano Rajoy.
On Tuesday, Sarkozy will visit the Spanish Parliament, where he will hold a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero.
The two leaders will discuss such issues as the battle against Basque extremist terrorist group ETA, Islamic extremism, drug trafficking, money laundering and illegal immigration.
