Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Tuesday declared Malakand division in the country 's northwest as calamity-hit area and announced its exemption from the agriculture taxes.
Addressing a gathering of farmers from across the country, Gilani said that the government would look after the crops of displaced people by arranging for its harvest and supply to the market.
Gilani said that the people of Malakand division had to leave their homes due to militants' presence; however the government realized that their hard work and crops should not go waste.
"They (internally displaced persons) have sacrificed their today for our tomorrow. Their sacrifice should be valued," he said.
Gilani said that the Pakistan People's Party had always been a farmer-friendly party and took steps for their betterment.
He mentioned that the government's step to diversify the economy by shifting it towards agriculture.
