Apple is planning to release its first Apple Watch with 4G connectivity later this year, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. This would allow the watch to conduct multiple tasks without having to first connect to an iPhone.
Intel will supply the LTE modems for the new Watch, one person familiar with the situation said. Qualcomm has been the main modem supplier for iPhones in the past, but the company may have chosen Intel due to its legal dispute with Qualcomm. Apple added Intel as a modem supplier for some iPhones last year.
Apple is already in talks with carriers in the US and Europe about offering the cellular version of the smartwatch, the report added. The new device could still be delayed beyond 2017; the company already postponed a cellular smartwatch last year. Apple, Intel and the carriers declined to comment.
