Taxi-hailing service Uber has announced an agreement with Visa under which Visa will work with its financial institution partners to set up debit and credit portfolios for eCommerce. The Uber/Visa partnership will give passengers flexibility to pay in the way they are most comfortable, while getting free lifts when they use their Visa card. This will enable faster adoption of digital payments, new revenue streams for banks and merchants, and create the platform for market leading digital companies like Uber to offer app-based payment facilities to customers.
In Kenya, the promotion will initially run in with KCB bank, Cooperative bank, Equity Bank and Barclays Bank and aims to use Visa's and Uber’s platforms to encourage the use of electronic payments among consumers. During the promotional period, new passengers in Kenya will get discounts off their first two journeys. Existing customers who pay by Visa will get a complimentary trip every sixth ride.
All passengers need to do is link their Visa card in the payment option of their Uber app before they set off. The offer runs until 02 April 2018.
