Ecobank Ghana and MasterCard have jointly rewarded customers for their loyalty to the use of MasterCard for purchases, instead of cash. The two institutions jointly launched a consumer sales promotion drive dubbed “The Ecobank-MasterCard Promo 2018” aimed at rewarding customers who use their MasterCard for purchases. The promotion was also aimed at making electronic card payment systems available to existing Ecobank customers as well as the wider unbanked population to accelerate the rate of card adoption and usage in Ghana.
The mechanics involved rewarding top ten (10) MasterCard transacting customers per month for three months along the sub themes: Shop Different, Dine Different and Holiday Different. The overall aim of the campaign was to help change the lifestyles and payment habits of customers, moving them away from cash transactions to digital payments. The promotion, which spanned the period February to April 2018 duly rewarded thirty (30) top transacting customers with various prizes. The top two (2) overall best transacting customers were each rewarded with a 2-night stay, for two, at the Royal Senchi Resort.
It will be recalled that Ecobank Transnational Inc., the parent company of Ecobank Ghana, signed a landmark multi-country agreement with MasterCard to bring MasterCard’s payment solutions to 34 sub-Saharan African markets at a ceremony held in Accra on June 15, 2015. This was a follow up on an earlier signed agreement by MasterCard and Ecobank, for the latter to issue MasterCard debit cards, prepaid cards, and credit cards to millions of its customers for the next 10 years, a collaboration that has seen Ecobank issue MasterCard-branded cards in its 34 markets in Africa.
Presenting the prizes were Morgan Fianko Asiedu-Executive Director, Legal and Compliance-Ecobank, Rita Aba Tsegah, Regional Head, Corporate Communication and Marketing – Ecobank and Obi Okwuebunam, Director, Business Development, West Africa –MasterCard.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Asiedu said; “Ecobank has always appreciated its customers, and by rewarding these lucky winners, we want to send a message to our customers and the larger Ghanaian populace of the need to adopt more efficient, customer-friendly and cash-lite payment methods. We are glad to note that customers have largely embraced MasterCard payment options. It is exciting knowing that our customers have Shopped Different, Dined Different and Holidayed Different, during the three months promotion period”.

Commencing operations in Ghana from February 1990, Ecobank Ghana has grown consistently over the years to become one of the biggest banks in Ghana and a well-recognized corporate brand in the Ghanaian banking industry. The Bank embarked on a strategic shift from a predominantly Wholesale Bank to a Universal Bank. Today it has 67 branches and over 200 ATMs across the country.
Since its establishment, Ecobank Ghana has consistently grown its shareholders’ equity to over GH¢1.037billion and total assets to GHS9.098billion by the close of 2017. This makes Ecobank one of the strongest banks financially and the bank of choice for customers’ deposits. The bank has segmented its markets into Corporate, Commercial and Consumer Banking business, in line with its strategy of providing tailored financial solutions to customers in a timely and efficient manner.
On the technology front, Ecobank is the first bank to introduce a Pan-African card that enables customers to withdraw cash and make payments in over 34 markets in Africa. The launch of the evolutionary Ecobank Mobile app, which is focused on financially empowering millions of new customers across Africa by 2020 has resulted in more Africans gaining access to financial services and products than ever before. In Ghana alone, the app has attracted over one million new customers thus fare. It is now possible for consumers across the Ecobank to make fast and secure payments by scanning a Quick Response (QR) code displayed at checkouts/pay points, using their mobile phones. Phone users with the use of their phones can therefore do nearly all banking transactions without entering any Ecobank branch.
