The Suame Municipal Assembly has begun a project to rehabilitate and bring to modern standards, all the existing major markets in the Municipality.
Dr. John Osei Bobie Boahin, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who announced this, said the move formed part of the Assembly's bid to provide convenient places for business activities and boost the Assembly's revenue generation.
"The overall objective is to boost and expand commercial activities in the various communities, to help improve the local economy", he added and said the facelift project will start with the Old Suame and Adadiem markets.
Additionally, the Assembly was planning to construct new stores at Maakro, Breman and Anomangye, which are some of the sprawling communities, for traders and other businesses wanting to operate in the Municipality.
Addressing the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the Assembly at Suame, he said the Market Redevelopment sub-committee, had already met with shop owners and occupants of stores within the existing markets for the smooth take-off of the project.
He advised Assembly Members in whose electoral areas the projects were sited, to accord the Assembly the needed support to ensure their successful implementation.
The MCE said as of the first quarter of the year ending 31st March, 2019, the Assembly had collected an amount of GH?625, 179.70 from the various revenue resources.
This represents 25.83 per cent of the targeted revenue of GH?2, 420, 688.77.
"If the trend proceeds as planned the Assembly is likely to exceed its revenue target by the end of the year," Dr. Bobie Boahin remarked.
The Assembly, he noted, would ensure a reliable data on all ratable as well as taxable items and properties within its jurisdiction, for effective revenue mobilization.
Other development projects being undertaken by the Assembly include, renewal and registration of billboards and sign posts, reshaping of selected community roads, beautification of the Suame Roundabout, as well as patching and resealing of selected potholes in order to improve the road network.
