MTN Ghana has taken a significant step towards promoting accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities by hosting a customer service outreach program in partnership with the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) and the National Association of Persons with Disability at the Disability Center in Adabraka, Accra.
The event, which marked Customer Service Week, aimed to celebrate customers and promote inclusion. According to Isaac Mate, General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN Ghana, the company's theme for the week, "We Listen, We Care, We Do," reflects its commitment to hearing customer feedback, understanding their needs, and taking meaningful action.
"We want to hear your experiences both the moments we excelled and where we fell short. Your feedback on our digital platforms, service centres and helplines helps us see our blind spots and prioritise improvements," Mr. Mate said.
Mr. Mate noted that mobile connectivity had become a gateway to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment. However, persons with disabilities were often left behind due to the "mobile disability gap." He emphasized that MTN Ghana was committed to closing this gap and ensure that everyone benefited from connectivity.
"We're updating our apps to work seamlessly with assistive technologies, training staff in basic sign language and disability awareness, collaborating with device makers to offer affordable accessible phones, and expanding network coverage to underserved areas," Mr. Mate explained.
The event provided an opportunity for persons with disabilities to share their experiences and provide feedback on MTN Ghana's services. Matthew Kubachua, National President of GNAD, highlighted the challenges faced by deaf customers in accessing MTN's services.
"Deaf customers often face difficulties in resolving issues with their accounts due to the inaccessibility of MTN's customer service lines. We appeal to MTN Ghana to establish dedicated deaf customer service lines staffed by individuals fluent in Ghanaian Sign Language," Mr. Kubachua added.
