Mr Ibrahim Tia, North East Regional Minister has reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting the growth and sustainability of the shea industry to enhance livelihoods and boost Ghana’s export earnings.
He said the government would continue to implement policies that encourage value addition, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment within the shea value chain.
Mr Tia made this known in a solidarity message delivered at the media launch of the Global Shea Alliance 2026 International Expo in Tamale on Tuesday.
He described the shea industry as one of the most important economic pillars of Northern Ghana, adding it had, over the years, supported rural livelihoods and created employment opportunities for thousands of people especially women.
He said, “For generations, the shea tree, often referred to as the tree of life, has supported rural livelihoods, strengthened household incomes, and created economic opportunities for our people.”
He said the sector, which spanned from the collection of shea nuts to processing into butter and other value-added products, continued to play a critical role in supporting industries such as cosmetics, food processing, and pharmaceuticals.
Mr Tia commended the Global Shea Alliance for its sustained efforts in promoting the global competitiveness of the shea industry and improving the livelihoods of people across the shea belt.
He noted that the upcoming Expo scheduled for April 27 to 29, 2026 at the Accra International Conference Centre would attract international buyers, investors, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development partners to explore opportunities within the global shea industry.
He emphasised the need to protect shea trees, improve processing technologies, and expand market access to maximise the full potential of the sector.
He urged stakeholders including local producers, women’s groups, cooperatives, entrepreneurs, and research institutions to actively participate in the Expo to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
