The Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, has urged young people to focus on purpose rather than job titles as they prepare to enter the world of work.
She made the remarks at the grand finale of the Success Africa Summit held at Akuafo Hall at the University of Ghana, Legon.
Speaking on the theme “Purpose at Work: Building Impact Beyond the Job Title,” she said that many young people focused too much on titles instead of understanding their true purpose.
She explained that a job title only described what a person did, while purpose defined who they were, adding that an overemphasis on titles often limited people to expectations instead of enabling them to explore their full potential.
She encouraged students to define themselves beyond labels, noting that without job titles, individuals would be forced to focus on their skills, passions, and impact.
She stressed that taking risks was key to growth and urged young people to go beyond their assigned responsibilities, noting that initiative and self-motivation often led to greater opportunities.
On women’s representation, she said that MTN Ghana had made significant progress, with women currently making up about 43 per cent of the workforce.
However, she noted that female representation remained lower in technical roles. She explained that in some cases, women turned down opportunities due to competing responsibilities, particularly family commitments, and advised young women to be intentional about managing such challenges if they aspired to leadership positions.
She emphasised that competence, continuous learning, and the willingness to take on opportunities were key to breaking barriers, adding that women sometimes had to go the extra mile to be recognised.
In an interview with BusinessGhana, she said that the summit was aimed at equipping young people with soft skills and practical insights needed to thrive in both professional and personal life.
She noted that personal growth required intentional effort, including learning, upskilling, and building strong relationships.
She further encouraged young professionals to approach their work with a mindset of adding value beyond what was required, noting that this not only enhanced career growth but also created meaningful impact.
The Chief Executive Officer of the summit, Albert Kusi, said that the initiative was designed to mentor and inspire young people by equipping them with the tools needed to succeed in an evolving world.
He explained that the summit focused on building capacity, promoting intentional development, and preparing participants to thrive in both employment and entrepreneurship.
