The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged MTN Ghana to position itself strongly for Ghana’s upcoming 5G rollout as the telecommunications giant officially launched its 30th anniversary celebrations in Accra.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister said that emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud services and data analytics would shape Ghana’s next phase of digital growth, stressing that collaboration between government and industry players would be crucial.
He noted that MTN had played a transformational role in Ghana’s telecommunications sector since entering the market in 1996, helping the country move from basic telephony to a modern digital economy.
According to him, the company’s investments in network expansion, fibre infrastructure and mobile financial services had significantly improved connectivity and financial inclusion across the country.
Mr George also referenced MTN’s recently announced US$1 billion investment in network infrastructure, describing it as a strong sign of confidence in Ghana’s economy despite global economic uncertainty.
He further praised the company’s contribution to domestic revenue generation and employment creation, noting that MTN’s ecosystem of agents, vendors and contractors supported hundreds of thousands of livelihoods.
Touching on future opportunities, the Minister said that the country must focus on affordable digital access, cybersecurity, digital skills development and infrastructure resilience while preparing for next-generation technologies.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, described the anniversary as more than a corporate milestone, saying it reflected three decades of connection, inclusion and progress in Ghana.
He said that MTN’s journey was not only about network infrastructure but about the lives transformed through communication, mobile money and digital services.
“Connection is opportunity. Connection is dignity. Connection is hope,” he said.
Mr Blewett noted that mobile money had become deeply woven into Ghana’s economy, supporting households, businesses and entrepreneurs across the country.
In an interview after the event, he disclosed that MTN planned to invest US$1.1 billion over the next three years to strengthen network quality and expand connectivity, with US$380 million expected to be invested this year alone.
He said that the company intended to roll out about 800 new network sites in 2026 to improve service delivery and customer experience.
On 5G, Mr Blewett said that MTN would participate in the upcoming spectrum auction and, if successful, would move quickly to expand access nationwide.
“We will use the opportunity of 5G to expand it very quickly so that everyone can get the benefit,” he said.
Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, said that the anniversary celebration would focus on the impact MTN had made over the years rather than simply marking its age.
She said that the company had moved beyond connectivity to promoting inclusion by bringing digital access into homes, schools, hospitals and businesses across Ghana.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, MTN announced reward promotions for customers running from June until December 2026, including cash prizes, data rewards, lifestyle experiences and nine Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicles to be won nationwide.
