The explanations usually circle back to the same familiar factors, from roads and ports to customs queues and paperwork. These are real, and they matter. But there is an underlying barrier that rarely makes the headlines, and it may be among the most fixable. Those stories matter, but they undervalue what blockchain offers a continent trying to integrate. It is not only a personal financial tool. It is trade infrastructure.

This is exactly the kind of problem the free trade area is trying to solve. It is harmonising the movement of value across more than 40 currencies, dozens of regulatory regimes and banking systems that were never designed to talk to one another. The Pan-African Payment and Settlement System has brought welcome progress towards letting Africans settle in local currencies, and blockchain-based settlement and well-regulated stablecoins can extend that ambition further.

The implications for African businesses are therefore significant. Small and medium enterprises are the engine of intra-African trade, yet they are the least served by the current system. They cannot easily absorb the foreign exchange spreads, the settlement delays or the working capital tied up in transit. A transparent settlement layer changes that, letting a manufacturer in Ghana sell to a buyer in Cameroon with the same ease as selling down the road.

For this to work, two priorities matter most. The first is a sound regulatory environment, shaped together with central banks, finance ministries and the institutions building the free trade area. That partnership is already producing results.
