With anticipation building for Innovation Africa 2019 (Accra, Ghana, December 3-5), Africa’s Official Ministerial Summit, so too must be the nerves of the Miss Geek Ghana contestants. Their final competition will be held during the acclaimed Conference, in its 9th year drawing together Ministers from across the continent alongside civil society organisations, universities and globally-recognized leaders in Education and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The competition will be held on the backdrop of this Summit, designed to propel next-generation education and higher education forward across the Pan-African marketplace.
The ninety-minute session will feature the top ten finalists from across the country, with the 3rd, 2nd and 1st place winners being announced, the overall winner to be crowned Miss Geek Ghana by Senior Officials from the Ministry of Communications at the event’s conclusion. Miss Geek Ghana will subsequently be sponsored to take part in the ’Miss Geek Africa’ competition, while being awarded in Accra free internet access for the entirety of 2020, along with a high-specification digital camera from sponsor Canon. Canon are also offering all top ten contestants training in the use of digital photography equipment.
The Ghanaian Ministry of Communications has fully adopted and currently promotes the competition in order to, “…move efforts forward in getting young women from just being consumers and leaning about ICT to becoming actual drivers of ICT-enabled solutions.”
John Glassey, Founder and CEO of Brains Global and African Brains (the Organizing Committee behind Innovation Africa) stated that Miss Geek Ghana is a perfect fit the Summit. “Our nearly ten-year long missio has been to bring together in one room decision-makers in policy, from the private sector and civil society, to circumvent any further delay in enhancing equal opportunity in ICT education and subsequently, careers born of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Miss Geek Ghana will showcase the inspirational ICT solutions invented anew by young women between the ages of 13 and 25 across Ghana, each playing their role to solve challenges in the country using technology. We commend their efforts and encourage young women and men to pursue careers and entrepreneurial opportunities in Science, Technologies, Engineering and Maths (STEM), which will help Ghana and no doubt Africa at large contribute to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) for the budding marketplace,” he stated.
Miss Geek Ghana 2019 launched on October 10th with applicants describing a problem they wanted to solve and providing solutions through conceptual designs, including depicting what technologies would need to be utilized or developed to achieve the end-goal and which stakeholders would need to be involved. All finalists underwent a week of training heading into the competition and will no doubt take this invaluable experience with them along the way.
Innovation Africa 2019 wishes each contestant all the very best and invites all conference participants to join us for the exciting conclusion to this fascinating contest.
