Sony’s retelling of “Cinderella,” starring Camila Cabello as the classic princess, is skipping its planned theatrical debut. The film will instead premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this year.

It’s unclear when the movie, which had already been delayed once due to the pandemic, will land on the streaming platform.

Sony originally intended to open “Cinderella” on the big screen this July, but the studio opted to license the film to Amazon Prime because movie theater attendance has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Sony will retain rights in China.

As the box office attempts to rebound following COVID-19, Sony has siphoned off nearly all of its movies that don’t feature an otherworldly superhero. The studio announced in April that “Vivo,” an animated musical with songs from “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, would premiere on Netflix instead of multiplexes. Likewise, the Kevin Hart drama “Fatherhood” is forgoing theaters and will arrive on Netflix in June. It also sold Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” to HBO Max and the Kristen Stewart romantic comedy “Happiest Season” to Hulu.

“Cinderella” was written and directed by Kay Cannon, a former “30 Rock” writer who is best known for creating the “Pitch Perfect” franchise. In the musical retelling of the classic fairytale about an orphan who longs to meet her prince charming, Billy Porter is portraying Cinderella’s fairy godparent and Idina Menzel is playing her evil stepmother. The cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan and Minnie Driver as Queen Beatrice.

The original 1950 animated Disney film popularized the songs “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.” The upcoming version will feature original songs from Cabello and Menzel.

“Cinderella” is Cabello’s acting debut following her successful music career. She previously described the remake as “funny” and “empowered.”

“It was one of those things that felt like God handcrafted it for me and was, like, ‘Here you go.’” Cabello said. “I just couldn’t say no. It’s honestly a dream for me. And also a little bit terrifying.”
