A 34-year-old farmer who attempted to rape a 70-year-old woman has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Kofi Nti, also known as Sakora, pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful entry, causing harm and attempted rape.
Detective Police Inspector R.K. Yeboah, told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Siameh, that the old woman lived at Obeng Sekyi cottage near Nankese while Nti lived in a nearby cottage.
On January 28, at about 2100 hours, the old woman retired to bed with her grandson, aged seven.
He said while they were asleep, Nti walked from his cottage to the woman's place and attempted to force the door open.
The woman asked who was at the door and what his mission was, but there was no response and the person continued to force the door open.
The prosecutor said the woman therefore woke up and opened the door to find out who the person was only to see the convict standing naked with his erected male organ.
The prosecutor said the convict then quickly pounced on the woman, lifted and threw her on the bed and struggled with her in an attempt to rape her.
Much as he tried, he could not penetrate and he even bit her shoulder to force her to yield but still the grandmother would not.
She then asked her grandson to rush to the next cottage for help but a neighbour arrived and when the convict heard his footsteps, he jumped from the woman and bolted.
The prosecutor said the visitor recognized him and shouted; "Sakora stop" and asked what he wanted at the old lady's cottage but the convict took to his heels.
Though the neighbour made efforts to catch him he did not succeed since Nti ran faster.
The next day, a report was made to the police and he was arrested.
In a caution statement to the police, he admitted the offence and said he was tipsy and wanted sexual satisfaction since he last had sexual intercourse three years ago.
The Judge said the accused had exhibited animal instincts and his crime should attract severe sentence, which would take him away from decent society for a long period.
