Doctor Osei K. Darkwa, President of the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) said the institute would introduce a Ph.D. programme in Information Communication Technology (ICT) this academic year.
He said the programme would also cover areas such as Telecommunication Engineering, to help expand access to higher education.
"We will not only expand access to higher education but also continue to produce quality manpower required for the country's development," he added.
Dr. Darkwa was speaking at the 6th matriculation ceremony of the GTUC in Accra at the weekend, for 174 matriculates, who would undertake various degree and diploma programmes in ICT related courses.
He said 94 of the students would read Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Telecom Engineering, 8 others would read BSc Computer Engineering, with 24 reading BSc Information Technology and the remaining 48 would read certificate courses at the Faculty of IT Business.
Dr Darkwa said the university had established strategic goals, to help the students learn hard and contribute to their quota to national development at the end of their studies.
"We have instituted measures to promote research and scholarly work, industrial collaboration, promote corporate social responsibility and public service"
"The university intends to promote virtual and online education, improve GTUC's physical and technological infrastructure as well as forge academic partnership with local and international academic and research training institutions," he said
Dr Darkwa advised, the students to make reading a habit, since it was the only tool to broaden ones knowledge as well as help them be conversant with modern trends.
He reminded the graduates that their ability to turn challenges into opportunities, would determine their success in their various fields of endeavour.
"You should have open minds while you learn from others and eschew laziness, arrogance and indiscipline," he said.
