Police say one person was lynched while two others sustained injuries from beatings and a gunshot, when violence erupted in Bawku on Thursday morning.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, the Bawku Municipal Police Commander, Godwin Cashman Blewushie said at about
10:20 hours on Thursday, a man who had a gunshot wound in the arm, rushed to the Police Station to lay a complaint and within a short time, two others
were attacked resulting in the death of one, while the other sustained serious injuries.
He said the Security Services then organized to control the situation and the people were asked to go indoors until further notice.
Mr Musah Abdulai, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, said the immediate cause could not be known but thought that such isolated cases occurred in the town because the people have refused to forgive each other and rather try to revenge anytime they had an opportunity to do so.
He said the protracted conflict had laid the foundation for such violent acts and appealed to the people to forgive the wrongs of their
neighbours so that they could all live in peace.
An Eyewitness had earlier told GNA that at about 1020 hours on Thursday there were sporadic gunshots in parts of the Township and people started running helter-skelter and for unexplained reasons a mob pounced on two men, whose identities were not immediately known, and lynched them near the Widana Station.
According to the Eyewitness a woman, who had been hit by bullet, was rushed to Dr Asaana Clinic, a local health facility, on a motorbike while a
man, bleeding from a gunshot wound on his shoulder, was seen running toward the Police Station.
Meanwhile, armed Military and Police personnel on the ground have ordered the residents to go indoors, using Information Service Department
vans to make the announcement. By 1400 hours all the streets in the Township had been deserted with security personnel patrolling.
