The Twifo Oil Palm Plantation (TOPP) Basic School has climaxed its Golden Jubilee celebration at Twifo Ntefrewaso with pomp and pageantry.
The ceremony coincided with the third Annual Speech and Prize Giving Day of the school.
Cultural displays, quiz competition, poetry recitals and clean up exercises formed part of activities marking the week-long celebration.
The Headteacher of the school, Mr. Michael Kudzo, said in his report that the school, which was established in 1984 with 80 pupils, now has 550 pupils with 15 teachers and eight teaching assistants.
Highlighting some achievements of the school, he said in 1988 when Johnson Wax Limited organised a nationwide essay competition for all primary schools, one Master Benedict Owusu Boateng, from the school and now a medical officer, won the first prize.
He said in 1996, Miss Vivian Arhin Sam, now a pharmacist, won the Head of State Award for the first time followed by Miss Abena Mensima Quarm, now a Biologist, in 1998 and in 2008, Leslie Atta Akplah and Esther Addo-Kumi all from the school, won.
Mr Kudzo said in 1991, Eric Mawusi Tsetse, now a mining engineer, won the first prize in a regional quiz contest organised by the Ghana Library Board in Cape Coast and in 2006, Kofi Krobea Asante also won the first prize of the regional reading competition organized by Unimax Macmillan in Cape Coast.
In terms of the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), Mr. Kudzo said TOPP JHS was adjudged the best in the region in 1996 and 1998 and in 2009 the school was the best in the district as well as among the best in the region.
Mr Kudzo said in 2009, of the 37 candidates presented for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), 34 had distinction with all
candidates gaining admission into first rate schools in the country.
He enumerated some of the problems the school was facing and said the food shed of the school needed to be fenced and furnished while a modern school library should also be constructed.
He said discipline had gone down in the school and that the school was strategizing to deal with the situation.
Mr. John Odoom, the District Director of Education, congratulated the management of the school for the excellent achievements and urged the teachers to improve upon their performance.
Mr. Joseph Foster Andoh, the District Chief Executive, said the school had contributed to the manpower needs of the district and the nation at
large and congratulated it for its achievements.
Mr. Neneyo Mate-Kole, the Managing Director of TOPP, said the achievements chalked by the school was motivated by the company through the
provision of logistics He also promised to find solution to problems facing the school.
The management of TOPP, producers of oil palm and a subsidiary of Unilever Ghana Limited, has been supporting the school with infrastructure,
tops up salaries for teachers and offers free accommodation for teachers posted to the school.
