The Management of Kumasi-based Truth weekly Newspaper, has announced plans to establish a scholarship scheme to support brilliant but needy student journalists in the country to help promote journalism as a career.
Mr Sebastian Freiku, Managing Editor and Publisher, made this known during the launch of the paper in Kumasi.
He also unveiled plans to institute an annual award dubbed: "Timothy Kow Freiku Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism," which would attract a cash prize of GH¢1,000.00.
Mr Freiku said modalities for the selection of scholarship beneficiaries would be done in collaboration with the Ghana Journalists Association.
He used the occasion to draw attention to the need for Parliament to hasten the passage of the Freedom of Information Bill into law, to raise journalistic standards.
Mr Freiku said the Truth was determined to make its mark and ensure objectivity in society.
Mr Samuel Sarpong, Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, underlined the importance of the media in national development and urged the newly launched newspaper to uphold the ethics of the journalism profession.
