The Discovery Channel and Discovery World both go back in time to unravel the mystery behind the boy king Tutankhamun when the channels screen KING
TUT UNWRAPPED (May 23 on Discovery World and May 29 on Discovery Channel).
Audiences are invited to tune in and see the two part series on DStv channels 121 and 250.
Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh who lived between 1341 BC - 1323 BC and was likely the 18th dynasty king, who, according to Egyptian historians had reigned for nine years.
In 1922, Howard Carter received worldwide attention after making the amazing discovery of Tatunkhamun's intact tomb. The discovery of
Tutankhamun's burial mask, which still remains as the most famous of all the finds, renewed public interest in ancient Egypt.
Exhibits of the artefacts from his tomb have since the discovery, toured the world. Earlier this year, the results of DNA tests confirmed that
Tutankhamun was the son of Akhentaten, the mummy in KV 55 and his sister or wife in KV 35YL, who is only known as The Younger Lady.
Tutankhamun was nine years old when he became pharaoh and reigned for only ten years. In historical terms, Tutankhamun's significance is said to stem from his rejection of the religious innovations of his father, Akhenaten.
A second factor to add to this is the state in which his (Tutankhamun) tomb was found, completely intact and the most complete ancient Egyptian royal tomb ever.
As he began his royal reign at such an early age, his political advisors and ministers most likely made most of the important political decisions.
The cause of his death is still not yet known, but there have been theories of Malaria, an accidental fall from his chariot during a hunting
expedition and even murder by his successor, his wife as well as his chariot driver.
What scientists have been able to prove however, is that there are a few abnormalities about the boy king's remains. One of the more significant is
the fact that the back of his head looks as though it experienced some blunt force trauma either due to a fall or a strike to the lower back of the skull.
In KING TUT UNWRAPPED (Discovery World on May 23 at 17:20 CAT and Discovery Channel on May 29 at 15:35 CAT) world renowned Egyptologist Dr.
Zahi Hawaas leads an unprecedented forensic investigation into the identity of King Tutankhamun's parents and grandparents, his cause of death and details of his reign.
Part one of the documentary follows the delicate DNA extraction from Tut's mummy, setting into motion a series of cross-reference studies to
determine the Boy King's family. Part two uses never-before-examined evidence to conclude what caused his death and how that information sheds
new light on his time as a military, religious and political leader.
From the pristine interiors and precision work of the DNA lab to the dusty, unpredictable dig sites in the field, Dr Hawass leads an intense, deeply personal journey for the truth.
