Elephant population in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu has shown an increase of six elephants after the two-day elephant census concluded
recently.
A total of 57 jumbos including 13 calves were found in various forests of the district, District Forest Officer Sundara Raju said.
The census programme was conducted by a team of 120 wildlife officials in Boothapandi, Alagiyapandipuram, Kulasekaram, Kaliyal forest divisions.
Of the 44 big elephants spotted, 32 were she elephants, he said, adding that there was no trace of unique magna elephants, which are male elephants without tusk, found in the forests in Tamil Nadu-Kerala border region ten years ago.
In the last census held in the district in 2008, 51 jumbos were spotted.
