In the backdrop of a majority of big budget Bollywood movies not doing well at the box last year, the Madurai-Ramanathapuram district Cinema Distributors Association has urged leading actors to slash their fees.
Since stars' salary comprises a major chunk of the total expenditure of a film, a reduction of it is inevitable for the survival of film Industry, the General Council of Madurai-Ramanathapuram district Cinema Distributors
Association Council said in a resolution.
Out of the 122 Tamil films released last year, only 90 of them ran in theatres for a week.
The Council, a powerful body of distributors in Tamil Nadu, said even the films of the 'so called famous stars' could not be run for more than four weeks and as a result,
distributors were suffering loss to the tune of several crores.
Not only the salaries of super stars, but also that of directors and techinical personnel has also increased manifold, they said.
"If this trend continued, all the theatres may have to be closed down," the resolution said.
In Kerala also, producers and distributors had complained about the growing cost of film production and asked superstars to reduce their fees as a solution for the crisis.
