A device developed by ISRO, which can send signals through satellite to a land station conveying the nature of emergency and location, can help rescue fishermen if they get lost in the high seas, while fishing, a Coast Guard official said.
"DAT, the device developed by Indian Space Research Organisation, would be very useful to fishermen since it has inbuilt GPS receiver to give position and time information. In the event of an
emergency, the user can manually activate the transmitter and press a switch indicating emergency condition to relay the message to a central station
through satellite," IG Commander Coast Guard Region (East) A Rajasekhar told reporters here.
More than 900 fishermen in the country have received the device and another one thousand transmitters would be distributed soon, he said.
