Deputy Minister of Information, James Agyenim-Boateng, says government is committed to establish a public-funded university in the Brong Ahafo Region.
A statement issued in Accra on Friday said Mr Agyenim-Boateng gave the assurance during a courtesy call on the chiefs and elders of Dormaa
Traditional Council, at Dormaa Ahenkro.
The Deputy Minister is on a tour of 12 districts in the Brong Ahafo Region, to explain government�s �Better Ghana� agenda policies and
programme.
Addressing the chiefs and elders of Dormaa, Mr Agyenim-Boateng said plans are on course to ensure the establishment of the university.
He said a technical team was in the region to discuss the modalities for the establishment of the academic facility with the key stakeholders, including chiefs of the area.
The university, the Deputy Minister said, would help more students in the region to access quality tertiary education.
At the primary school level, Mr Agyenim-Boateng said the government�s �Better Ghana� agenda is rolling out some interventions including free exercise books, free school uniforms, elimination of schools under trees, 50
per cent increment in capitation grant and expansion in the school feeding programme.
This, he said, is expected to sustain enrolment in schools and improve the quality of education.
Touching on the National Youth Employment Programme, Mr Agyenim-Boateng explained that government is not sacking those hooked to the scheme but rather implementing an exit plan that spans 24 months.
As part of the exit plan, the Deputy Minister said government is providing opportunities for professional training for those who want to
become teachers and nurses.
Barima Yeboah Kodieh II, Aduanahene of Dormaa Traditional Area, thanked President John Evans Atta Mills for his vision to establish a university in the region.
He said the Dormaa Traditional Area had already released more than 2,000 acres of land towards the establishment of the university.
Later, Mr Agyenim-Boateng addressed the Duayaw Nkwanta District Assembly, Berekum and Dormaa Municipal Assemblies where he answered
questions on a wide range of issues.
