Civil Society Organisations working to promote the rights of the child should include parents in their educational campaigns to enable them to know and respect the rights of children.
Mrs. Annacleta Naab, Acting Regional Director of the Department of Children, made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, at Wa, in the Upper West Region, on Tuesday.
Mrs. Naab said most parents, especially those in the rural areas, did not fully understand the rights of the child so they usually infringe on them.
She stressed that educating children alone on their rights was not enough to promote child rights, hence the need to include parents in the
education process.
Mrs. Naab also urged parents to make efforts to upgrade their parenthood skills to enable them to understand the rights and behaviour of their children to offer them the right assistance to become responsible citizens.
"We are now in a scientific era and parents must strive to break the yoke that forbids them from discussing certain important issues concerning the welfare of their children face to face with them," she emphasized.
She said nowadays children have a lot of exposure to negative media messages that could influence their lifestyles, adding that, parents must, therefore, begin to discuss things openly with them to help transform their lives.
"Parents must begin to discuss issues concerning HIV/AIDS and general child health to better inform children about the dangers and how they could avoid them, she added.
