Isaac Afenya, a driver, was on Thursday, convicted to a fine of GHC 120 by the Kade District Magistrates Court, for failing to report an accident in which he was involved.
In default, Afenya, who pleaded guilty, would serve four months in prison in hard labour.
Afenya had earlier been additionally charged with negligently causing harm but when the case docket was sent to the Attorney Generals (AGs)
Department for advice it was recommended that he should only face the charge of failing to report an accident to the police.
Police Detective Stephen Atsu Gamado, prosecuting, told the court that the complainants were Asuom policemen while the convict, a native of
Akawani, was resident in Accra.
He said on May 23, 2008, during a visit to Akawani, a woman fell sick and Afenya was asked to convey her to the hospital.
On his return, he knocked down a bicycle rider, Abanzule Sumaila, who sustained injuries and was sent to the Asuom health centre.
The prosecutor said in view of the seriousness of the injuries, Sumaila was referred to the St. Dominic Hospital at Akwatia on June 01, 2008.
He said Afenya however, failed to report the accident to the police but he was later arrested in Accra and sent back to Asuom.
The Magistrate told Afenya that he was lucky that the AGs office advised that he should be charged with only failing to report an accident
otherwise he would have gone to prison for three years.
When Afenya explained that he fled after the accident, because of fear of being beaten, the magistrate told him that he could have reported at any nearby police station.
